The nail gun is an exotic rifle that requires multitools as ammo, rather than regular 7.62. Fires one more bullet per fire action than the 7.62 assault rifle while doing the same base damage as the 7.62 riot SMG, except with the pierce damage type and a much larger magazine.

The weapon modifier's name is a reference to the Industrial music project Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor who also composed the soundtrack for Quake, which was one of the first video games that featured the Nailgun as a weapon. In Quake, the ammo boxes for the Nailgun have the Nine Inch Nails logo printed on them.
