When starting a game, you have a choice of game modes:
Some game modes need to be unlocked by reaching a rank in the meta-progression.
The tutorial is a single scripted level which introduces some basic controls and tactics.
A regular game is the normal base game from which the other modes modify.
Challenge modes and trial modes modify a regular game in different ways to provide a bigger challenge. The selection of a challenge mode is independent from difficulty, although they cannot be played on "easy". In general, challenge modes modify the rules concerning your character in some way, while trials modify the game world in some way. Each challenge or trial has it's own set of badges to achieve.
Preset seed mode allows you to replay a specific random seed, and can be combined with challenge or trial modes.
High scores[]
Tutorial and Preset seed games do not count for high scores or achievements.
Currently, Challenge games have their scores in the main scoreboard, but Trial games get their own separate scoreboard for each trial, which is not currently viewable through the menu but is shown whenever you finish a trial game.
